Gears of War 2
Xbox 360/ Shoot ‘em up/ 60 hZ/ Hardcore/Casual
Those of you who played the original Gears of War, will know that it was the most advanced game of the year 2006, in terms of graphics, storyline and, most notable of all, gameplay. The Gears style cover system has been replicated and stolen by so many other games since the title’s release, in particular 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand and Terminator: Salvation. Albeit mediocre games, their more enjoyable aspects they owe to Gears.
It’s late 2008, over 2 years since the release of Gears of War. How could Microsoft improve on a game with such a hardcore fanbase, most of whom believe that it is literally perfect?
The moment I turned the game on, something I personally noticed was the startup screen was a little too similar for my taste, but hardcore fans will feel darkly, nostalgically at home. Choices for game modes are more versatile than the standard shooter, including the newly added “Horde” mode. The cover-system for all modes has remained intact, leaving the vast majority of people happy. All these things given, the Campaign is my personal favourite mode- best played cooperatively.
GoW’s online following is still strong 2 years on, and now, it has been improved tenfold. This is the first bit of online play that has genuinely blown me away since Call of Duty 4. A most incredible way to play an incredible game? Indeed.
A fun filled yet gruesome addition to the already rich collection of online game modes is the new "Chainsaw" battle mode. Each player has a chainsaw lance, so the chances of winning aren't decreased/ increased by the old "F*cking Shotgun Noob" of the game, who "Kills you when you least G*ddamn expect it".
In conclusion, Epic did an epic (AHEM) job. All aspects of the game that the hardcore population of Live love has remained: Chainsaws? Check. Amusing-yet-Cheesy one liners courtesy of Marcus Fenix? Check. A member of the Carmine family being a noob? Check. Bloodstained boots? Check, check, checkeroo. Let’s hope that Halo 3: ODST will be an improvement on that series. Bungie must be bricking it.
